Petition Candidates for Sierra Club Board 2022

Please support these Candidates who are running by petition in order to change the current direction of the Board majority on a number of key issues:

  • Aaron Mair
  • Dr. Michael Dorsey
  • Maya Khosla
  • Kathryn (Kate) Bartholomew
  • (A fifth petition candidate,  James Woodley, had to withdraw from the race due to health reasons.)

Their slate would restore many of the key principles for which the Sierra Club has stood: wildlands protection, strengthening the grassroots chapter and groups rather than imposing a corporate top-down structure, supporting outings, including Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) and chapter-level outings; and eliminating secrecy in Club board of directors decisions.

More information is on their website:

Grassroots Choice for Sierra Club Board 2022

How to Vote:

One of the 5 “Grassroots Choice” candidates that I am supporting had a medical issue so had to drop out. The remaining 4 were able to easily submit sufficient petition signatures to qualify.

Most importantly, when you receive your Sierra Club ballot for the 2022 board election vote, please VOTE for these 4 candidates, and to prevent watering down your vote, no others.

The recommendation is to limit your vote to just the 4 candidates – because otherwise it dilutes your vote for those four. The wisdom is that this tactic can be used to maximize the chance that the voter’s favorite candidate(s) will be elected, while increasing the risk that other favoured candidates will lose. See Wikipedia; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet_voting

In this particular election year, unlike most years, each set of candidates are running as a “slate” against the other slate.  So, voting for an individual from the opposite slate just weakens the vote for our slate. It is unfortunate that one of our candidates had to drop out early on, but that’s why there are only 4 instead of 5. There really is an ideological grouping here, whereas in the past individual candidates seemed more independent.

Importantly for Planet Patriots, the current Board majority has promoted inaccurate and misleading attacks on the Sierra Club’s founder, John Muir. These attacks should be rescinded. Also, the behavior of current Board members around this topic (particularly aimed against those Board members and volunteers seeking to set the record straight) has been very public and alarming to many of our Chapter and Group volunteers. This behavior must stop as well.  For information on these attacks, see: https://johnmuir.org/sierra-club-vs-john-muir/
