The island nation of Palau, a former U.S. trust territory in the Pacific Ocean, issued a set of stamps honoring Environmental Heroes of the 20th Century in 1999.
In this stamp, Al Gore, former U.S. Senator and former Vice-President of the United States, is featured with three images of Earth. This represents his ground-breaking environmental book Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit.
According to the press release from Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corp., new-issue agent for Palau and about 70 other countries, the stamp salutes Gore for his conservation efforts, his book, and his international efforts to deal with the danger of climate changes brought on by global warming.
This is probably the second postage stamp to feature Vice-President Gore. Al Gore was originally pictured in the border area of a souvenir sheet issued June 30, 1993, by St. Vincent to commemorate the inauguration of President Clinton (Scott #1896).
