Album Review: Evergreen, Everblue

by Raffi

On this album, available on compact disk or audiocassette, the well-known children's folk singer, Raffi, turns his attention to a very adult theme: the environmental crisis. The album includes a number of songs which include patriotic lyrics for the Earth.

Some, but not all, of the songs are geared toward children. In "Big Beautiful Planet," Raffi sings:

There's a big beautiful planet in the sky
It's my home, it's where I live
You and many others live here too
The earth is our home, it's where we live
But the title song, 'Evergreen, Everblue', like most of the songs, will be enjoyed by everyone, young and old. It includes beautiful lyrics to accompany a very nice melody:
Evergreen, Everblue
As it was in the beginning we've got to see it through
Evergreen, Everblue
At this point in time it's up to me, it's up to you.
His message of environmental responsibility then goes into a refrain of voices from the rainforest and the oceans, calling out, "Help this planet earth!" But the songs also delve into a deeper spiritual realm. "Our Dear, Dear Mother" is a sort of Pantheist "Lord's Prayer" addressed to the planet Earth. But, Raffi's beautiful message to our "daily provider," is not focused on what we get from the Earth, but on what we can do "to honor you, to know you and to show our love." If you enjoy folk or folk-rock style music', and want to hear some great planet-loving lyrics, I heartily recommend this album!
